  Traditionally, a refund transaction processed by a merchant, also known as an offline credit, could be processed without the authorization of the card issuer. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a month, leaving the customer without funds for an unknown length of time. Customers sometimes initate chargeback requests when this happens.  
  Card networks now require an authorization request for every credit card Credit or Return transaction to provide real-time balance updates to cardholders. The credit response will include the authorization code, transaction ID, and authorization response code.
