Mutual TLS Authentication

Mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) is an extension of the standard TLS protocol that ensures both the client and server authenticate each other. This bidirectional authentication ensures secure communication between clients and servers by verifying the identities of both parties in a communication session.

Implementing mTLS using DigiCert certificates provides these key benefits:

Enhanced security—Both client and server identities are verified, which reduces the risk of man-in-the-middle attack.
Data integrity—Data transferred between the client and server is encrypted and cannot be tampered with.
Access control—Only authenticated clients with valid certificates can access server resources, providing an additional layer of security.

With mTLS, both the client and the server present certificates to prove their identities. This differs from standard TLS, where only the server provides a certificate and the client remains unauthenticated.
