Pay As You Go (PAYG)

These are the key characteristics of the Mastercard PAYG transaction model:
  • Multimodal journeys.
  • Distance-based fares.
  • EMV contactless fare collection gates or points of entry.
  • Account verification request (AVR) authorization for a small amount or the maximum fare amount.
  • Deny list checking to block cardholder entry due to a previously declined transaction.
  • Offline data authentication to confirm card is valid.
  • Multiple card taps that are aggregated into a single payment.
  • Deny list manager maintains the deny lists and distributes them to terminals.
  • Back office records all trips and fares to perform journey reconstruction to calculate the final fare.
  • Single payment capture for one or more fares during the travel period.
  • Standard payment follow-on transactions.
  • First ride risk protection when the first authorization fails.
  • Debt recovery when the AVR authorization is declined.
